Nashville bathroom remodeling trends

biophilic-bathroom remodeling trendBathroom remodeling trends in the 2020s are a hot topic in Nashville. Well, to be fair, bathroom remodeling has always made up a significant portion of residential remodeling in the booming city of Nashville, so bath remodeling pretty much remains a hot topic from month to month, year to year, and even decade to decade. It’s always a hot topic!

We have touched on the aging-in-place trends which include ways to make bathrooms safer, but we have not concentrated on general bathroom remodeling trends here in this blog for a while. Well, this is the first in a series of articles covering various aspects of bathroom remodeling in Nashville.

Thanks to our decades of experience remodeling bathrooms, we tend to have a good feel for what’s trending – especially in the Nashville area. Simply put, we know exactly how to design and build whatever type of bathroom you want. While we cannot say “We’ve seen it all,” I can assure you that we’ve seen quite a bit of variety in bathroom remodels over the years – including bathroom remodels which must be seen to be believed!
Even you’re not exactly sure what you want or might be looking for in your new bathroom, we can show you many possibilities in the realm of bathroom design and remodeling. It’s what we do!

Here are a few of the Nashville bathroom remodeling trends we’ll cover:

  • Bathroom color trends
  • Biophilic bathroom design
  • Freestanding bathtubs
  • Vanity islands
  • Floating vanities
  • Open showers
  • Linear drains
  • His and her this & that

Color trends in bathroom remodeling

Some of the trends relating to bathroom colors include the following:

  • Color-saturated high gloss tiles – major contrast
  • Bold colors
  • Black bathrooms

Installing sinks and getting yourself a trendy new tub aren’t the only ways to give your bathroom a fresh look and feel. Boldly contrasting, vivid colors are a great way to create a striking bathroom. Get rid of the old lackluster coloring and spice it up. Our designers will be happy to help you come up with zesty bathroom color ideas.

It’s certainly popular these days to replace older, possibly drab colors for visually striking colors. Lime green has been a rather common request; this can definitely give the room a bright, summer feel. Matte black is also increasing in popularity, as one of its strengths is to provide a superb contrast with brighter colors used with it. One might say that, as far as the bathroom is concerned, black is the new gray.

Biophilic bathroom designs: Plants, nature

Could it be time to bring your bathroom to life – literally?

biophilic-bathroom remodeling trendNature lovers, you’ll love this biophilic design trend! This look really gives the feel of putting man in touch with nature. As we’ve mentioned in another remodeling article, it has been scientifically proven that we’re more efficient, calm, happy, and even more focused when surrounded by nature. Some readers may have taken note of this trend in commercial surroundings where you shop; retail spaces are increasingly integrating plants – such as ground cover and vines – beautifully into and around their stores.

The easiest and most obvious biophilic addition would be plants. One quick way to make the bathroom feel much more natural and in tune with nature is to integrate plants into the mix. I recently saw a bathroom with vines covering about 75% of a wall. It was outstanding. We can help you create a green wall – a wall of plants, more or less. You can also choose tiles made of natural materials. In terms of colors for a biophilic space, opt for soothing tones with some whites, grays and greens. As light colors (especially white) reflect light, such colors are perfect for a biophilic room.

To top off the biophilic space, let in as much natural light as possible. There are some creative ways to do this. There could be no more of a natural pairing than natural light and living plants.

As a lifetime nature lover, this type of feature is so interesting that I’m writing a separate article to focus specifically on biophilic trends in remodeling.

Freestanding tubs

There for a while, it seemed that the bathtub had been banished from the bathroom; however, tubs really have returned to the bathroom with style. But larger tubs are not right for every bathroom, especially small or even tiny bathrooms.

Your answer may be a Japanese soaking tubs, aka the ofuro tub, which are smaller and deeper than standard American bathtubs and almost always include a bench to sit on. People seem to really like the unique, smaller look of Japanese soaking tubs, which generally take up less of the premium space in the bathroom, are available in many different finishes, and can even help reduce your water bill.

The freestanding tub is a bathroom classic that remains in style – and it’s easy to see why! Freestanding tubs can match any just about any bathroom decor with ease, whether you’d prefer a classic look like copper or clawfoot tubs or relatively modern stone resin. Though they may seem expensive, both freestanding bathtubs and sinks often increase the value of the home. The style itself certainly stands the test of time.

A related trend is to include a bathtub in the shower area; more on that later.

We are hearing the word spa a lot more these days. Many people are looking to create the makings of the ultimate spa experience in their master bathroom. We’ll probably address this aspect more in a future bath remodeling article.

Showers

No-threshold, walk-in showers have been a popular bathroom remodeling request for a while now; but in a closely related trend, we are seeing much more frequent requests for large-format tiles and linear drains (more on this below). We’re also seeing a lot of clear glass showers.

Large-format tiles

Large-format tiles are generally tiles that are a minimum of 16 inches but are available up to 10 feet in length. Large-format tiles can be rectangular or square and are generally made from stone, porcelain, or ceramic. With such large tiles, there is somewhat of a seamless appearance since there are far fewer places to use grout. They can present the illusion of a bigger space than it actually is. It’s a very clean and smooth look. Incidentally, there’s also less grout which tends to get dirty, so they are actually easier to keep clean.

Open showers

There are many different types of showers on the market; However, open-concept showers (some influenced by Italian showers) are trending, particularly when they are fully equipped and multi-functional. This often translates to having ambient lighting, an integrated bench, an anti-fog mirror, a misting system, and a linear drain, among other attributes.

People are using plenty of clear glass; for instance, a glass wall often separates the shower and/or bath area from the rest of the bathroom. One of the most striking advantages of this bathroom remodeling trend is that the bathroom can appear larger, more open and spacious.

Linear drains

You might be surprised to see something as utilitarian as a bathroom drain listed among these Nashville bathroom remodeling trends, but shower drains are actually undergoing a change.

Many of today’s remodeled bathrooms now have floors sloping ever so slightly toward a long, narrow linear drain. Some linear drains are visible while others appear to be hidden behind one of the walls of the bathroom, delivering an upscale appearance. You certainly can’t hide a central drain. So what we have here is the replacement of the old-school central drain with a linear drain for a more elegant and clean appearance.

Vanities

Floating vanity

Floating vanities are also popping up in our Nashville-area bathroom remodels. A floating vanity is a type of vanity which does not touch the ground; instead, it is affixed to a wall. The floating vanity is a fairly popular contemporary option in bathroom remodeling if you’re after a sleek, clean appearance; however, because they do not go all the way to the floor, the storage space is rather limited.

There are a couple of good reasons for the increasing popularity of the floating vanity. When the vanity does not go all the way down to the floor, more space is created, making a small bathroom seem a bit larger. Second, bathrooms with floating vanities are much easier to clean since there are no legs or posts coming down to the floor.

Vanity island

You’re probably already aware of a respectable “his & hers” trend when it comes to the master bedroom and master bathroom. Because of this, double-sink vanities seem to be coming back in a slightly different configuration. Rather than being side-by-side, the second vanity is installed island-style. That is, not only do we have the concept of the island in the kitchen; now, there’s the vanity island for the master bathroom.

One of the drawbacks of vanity islands is that they require more space – often more space than the bathroom has; so this is more suitable for larger bathrooms. On the plus side, a vanity island can provide a decent amount of storage space.

His and her private vanity mirror divide

“Separate but together,” despite sounding like a Zen riddle, seems to describe the overall “his and her” trend – especially a his and her vanity. Both residents can get ready at the same time since there’s plenty of room, a large mirror, and two sinks. What could be more practical? In such a setup, the mirror is the centerpiece; so some interesting and unique mirror designs and styles are appearing more frequently these days.

His and her bathrooms

Another bathroom remodeling trend we’re seeing in the Nashville area goes well beyond double vanities and separate sinks: His and her bathrooms! It goes without saying that men and women have vastly different hygiene needs, habits, and preferences. For some couples, two sinks and vanities just don’t cut it – thus, the master bedroom with two amazing custom bathrooms designed and built to accommodate your preferences and routines. Sounds pretty good to me!

We were not able to cover all of the exciting bathroom remodeling trends that are happening here in Nashville and the surrounding area; maybe we’ll write another article soon to cover them.
